Manchester United beat Copenhagen in Cologne, Germany: Europa League 2020 Semi Final vs Sevilla (ultimate champions of UEFA Europa League 2020)

[Final update about final: 21 August] [First updated: 12 August]

Sevilla, who beat Manchester United in the semi-final, won their sixth - that's right, 6, half a dozen, the number that appears thrice in the number of the beast, and what a beast the Sevilla team has been - UEFA Europa League.

After having 2 goals disallowed, Manchester United finally overcame Copenhagen FC (FC Kobenhavn) through a Bruno Fernandes (who else?) penalty in extra time.

The match in Cologne, Germany (which is playing host nation to the Europa League final stages as part of the #FootballIsBack campaign after COVID - 19 sent sports events packing behind closed doors) began boisterously, with both sides showing attacking intent. Free kicks from Marcus Rashford and attempts on target by Mason Greenwood pressured the Copenhagen defence, before they had to substitute an injured Boilesen with Bengtsson.

Mohammed Daramy took a few shots at Sergio Romero in Manchester United's goal, but it was mostly the front trio of Rashford, Greenwood and Martial who were causing problems at the other end of the pitch. Just as added time for the first half began, Mason Greenwood scored but VAR ruled it offside. Marcus Rashford also had a goal disallowed later.

After half-time, Paul Pogba began to make his presence felt more in midfield, allowing Fred and Brandon Williams to contribute higher up the pitch. The post and crossbar denied Manchester United a couple of times. Frustration started to show through, with quick yellow cards shown to Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly. The latter was substituted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Victor Lindelof, and Nemanja Matic came on for Fred.

At the end of regulation time, Ole brought on creative workhorse Juan Mata, who replaced an obviously disappointed Mason Greenwood.

His addition created a flurry in the game, and led to the decisive penalty when Anthony Martial was fouled in the box. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and shot past Karl-Johan Johnsson, whose heroics in goal had kept Manchester United at bay up till then. Extra time ticked away as the scoreline read 1-0, and the Red Devils will now face Sevilla.

Inter Milan defeated Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2 - 1 with former Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku scoring one of the goals, and they will play either Shakhtar Donetsk in the other semi.

The semi finals of Europa League 2020 are scheduled for the coming Sunday & Monday, 16th/17th August, with the next Manchester United match also taking place in RheinEnergieStadion, the venue for yesterday's match won by Manchester United. Will it prove to be happy hunting grounds once again for Ole's Reds? We will find out if they make the final to be held on Friday, 21st August, 2020!
