Studio Ghibli Films, Classified for Curious Cinephiles

As I set them out in my previous post, there are 3 broad categories of Studio Ghibli films. To reiterate:

  1. The bulk of their output is shockingly surreal and supremely supernatural. This group of movies is also the most awarded, and hence better known, all over the world, not just in anime circles.

  2. Some of their movies are a mix of the two realms of fantasy and fact. They might be steampunk, or slightly askew from reality, but not outright otherworldly. Their early movies fell more into this category.

  3. And then there are the least-known, most realistic slice-of-life films that are real in the sense that most live-action films are: depictions of Japanese life as it happens IRL, as the kids say.

Now, to the reason you have generously & graciously paid to be here: which category of Studio Ghibli movies suits you best?

Lemme make this a li'l fun for you: here are 7 Yes/No/Maybe statements. Just keep an approximate track of whether you give more Yeses, Nos or Maybes, and by the end of this "quiz" (if I may call it that), you will know which Studio Ghibli movie category suits you best! Be yourself, no one knows what you are thinking or is judging your answers: this is just a small part of your overall personality! Don't overkill, just Ghibli & chill!

Bonus shortcut: If you want to see my categorized list of Studio Ghibli movies without learning more about your (movie-going) self, just scroll to the bottom, as my ScrollStack compatriot Nitin says! Happy watching!

[Y/N/M] You like watching films that have an underlying moral.

[Y/N/M] You are deeply concerned about environment & nature.

Would you drink that water, bubbly as it seems?

[Y/N/M] You watch movies to forget the world, if only for a short while.

Juan Moreno y Herrera–Jiménez, known as Jean Reno, probably watching one of his own movies

[Y/N/M] You like to indulge in folklore, myths or fables.

[Y/N/M] You would prefer to live in a forest rather than a city.

Is this how you see yourself living? (Maria Jose Da Luz on GIPHY)

Wasn't that fun? And now, without any further ado...

Here are your Much-Awaited Results!

Mostly Yes: If you haven't seen these movies yet, add them to your must-see list!

Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Topcraft Studio), Tales From Earthsea

Mostly No: Get a heartening, uplifting dose of beautiful slice-of-life these movies!

The Wind Rises, Grave of the Fireflies [warning: tearjerker], My Neighbors the Yamadas, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Only Yesterday, From Up on Poppy Hill, Ocean Waves, When Marnie Was There

Mostly Maybe: These slightly off-kilter films are (almost) certain to entertain!

Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky, Pom Poko, Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, The Cat Returns [must-see for Haruki Murakami fans], Whisper of the Heart, The Secret World of Arrietty

It's obvious that the Yes pertains to my first category, the No to the third and the Maybe to the in-between crossovers of the second category.

Moreover, the movies within the categories are also in a preferred order, so start with the ones at the beginning of the lists and stop when you feel you have reached the end of your tether, because Ghibli means a gust of hot wind (Italian), and not everyone enjoys their fare. Try them out!

What are you waiting for? Enjoy (more) Studio Ghibli films! Kanpai!
